Transport and Covid-19: responses and resources

Moroccan chapter of decarbonisation project kicks-off

One of the biggest challenges for climate change mitigation is to enable emerging economies to continue lifting people out of poverty while at the same time reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The ITF’s Decarbonising Transport in Emerging Economies (DTEE) project helps governments of emerging nations to identify ways to reduce their transport CO2 emissions and meet their climate goals.

Morocco became the third country to officially launch the project following Argentina in September 2019 and Azerbaijan in November 2019. ITF Secretary-General Young Tae Kim and Morocco's Minister of Equipment, Transport, Logistics and Water, Abdelkader Amara kicked-off the Moroccan chapter of DTEE in Rabat on 26 November. The Minister extended his full support for the project and also emphasised Morocco's priority focus on decarbonising transport.

Members of ITF's Decarbonising Transport initiative team provided an overview of the project scope, objectives, and timelines as well as examples of other similar ITF projects. Various local stakeholders from ministries and research institutes then presented on their work in the field. This included an overview of Morocco's climate change adaptation plans and the role of electric mobility in the transition towards a sustainable transport future.

Prior to the kick-off events, Young Tae Kim accompanied Minister Amara to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Morocco's TGV launch. Mssrs Kim and Amara held a video interview on road safety developments in Morocco, infrastructure prioritisation and decarbonisation.
