Fourth Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety - Parallel Session: Advancing the Safe System Approach: Enablers, Challenges, and Lessons for Implementation
09.00 - 10.30 (UTC+1)
Ambassador Auditorium
The Safe System approach is a key road safety strategy, recognising human errors and designing road systems to minimise harm. Many regions have reduced fatalities and serious injuries by adopting this approach, but implementation remains challenging, especially in LMICs with limited institutional capacity, funding, and political support.
ITF Senior Project Manager Veronique Feypell moderates this session, which examines the real-world impact of Safe System implementation through national, state, and local case studies. It explores key success factors such as strong leadership, multi-sector collaboration, and evidence-based interventions while addressing barriers like regulatory gaps, funding shortages, and resistance to change. By showcasing political benefits and the need for integrated system components, this discussion equips policymakers, practitioners, and advocates with insights to accelerate global Safe System adoption.
