Charting an Innovative Transport Future to Face Uncertainty and Change
Paris/Seoul, 11 December 2024
Futurist transport policy event showcasing innovative ways to face the sector's unpredictability and technological advances comes to Korea
The International Transport Forum (ITF), in collaboration with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of the Republic of Korea and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority (KOTSA), jointly host an international conference on "Innovation Futures: Beyond the Horizon and Global Mobility Conference 2024" at the Conrad Seoul Hotel on 12 and 13 December 2024.
ITF Secretary-General Young Tae Kim is joined by Korea's Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Sangwoo Park to open the conference. Yongsik Jeong, President of KOTSA and Sung Kyu Maeng, Chairman of the Korea National Assembly's Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee, join the opening ceremony to set the stage for two days of debate on topics ranging from AI and automated driving to future vision and fit-for-purpose governance models.
The event is part of ITF's Mobility Innovation Hub, launched in June 2022. The Hub has helped governments develop policies for better transport in the face of uncertainty and rapid change. Over the past two and a half years, the Mobility Innovation Hub has published eight reports and organised its global conference in Paris, France, in September 2023. This second conference features ten sessions and brings together 50 leading experts from the public and private sectors, academia, and global organisations to discuss and share cutting-edge ideas and experience around innovation scanning and jumpstarting innovation.
ITF Secretary-General Young Tae KIM commented:
"Innovation is directly connected to creating a better society, and the ITF is committed to taking a leading role in this field, collaborating with the ITF members and stakeholders, as always. Through continuous engagements, such as this event, the ITF, as a global platform, aims to bring innovative futures to the world."
The event showcases new innovative findings through four new Mobility Innovation Hub reports:
- Fare's Fair: Experiences and Impacts of Fare Policies
- The Final Frontier of Urban Logistics: Tackling the Last Metres
- Lost in Transmission: Communicating for Safe Automated Vehicle Interactions in Cities
- Measuring New Mobility: Case Studies and Best Practices
Site visits to Hyundai Motors and Kakao Mobility - ITF Corporate Partnership Board (CPB) members - and Korean Expressway Corporation allow conference participants to learn more about Korea's transport sector innovations.
Other conference highlights include an "Inspiration Speech" by Robin Chase, Founder of Zipcar and NUMO (New Urban Mobility Alliance). Yumi Otsuka, Chief Sustainability Officer of Toyota Motor Corporation, and Sung Nak-Sun, Senior Managing Director of Hyundai Motor, join the "Vision Talk". The "When Innovation Meets the Road" session includes a panel discussion with leaders from the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the International Road Transport Union (IRU) and the International Road Federation (IRF). The "Beyond the Horizon Masterclass" showcases governments' roles in developing and fostering innovation through direct interaction between panels and attendees.
