Transport and Covid-19: responses and resources

ICAO and International Transport Forum joint agreement to advance sustainable aviation

UN’s civil aviation agency and OECD-housed strategic transport policy think tank renew collaboration agreement

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Transport Forum (ITF) at the OECD will deepen collaboration and broaden the scope of their joint work towards the sustainable development of air transport.

The renewed Memorandum of Co-operation (MoC) focuses on data sharing and exploring future joint projects in areas including liberalisation and inclusivity in international air transport, aviation safety and efficiency, infrastructure investment and sustainability.

The MoC builds on a 2015 agreement and 2019 renewal that allows the exchange of information and staff across both bodies.

“This historic collaboration is a ‘win-win-win’ for both our organisations and for the aviation sector at large”, said Young Tae Kim, ITF Secretary-General. “By facing the immense challenges of sustainable aviation together, we increase efficiency and effectiveness. But not only; the deeper understanding that this agreement allows – including through data sharing – will help to design more impactful aviation policies as we strive for greater sustainability. Building towards the ITF 2025 Summit on resilience, I am particularly pleased that our agreement captures the need to strengthen air transport to face future crises.”

Other potential areas for collaboration include the infrastructure needs of developing countries, aviation security, investing for decarbonisation, gender equality and diversity in aviation including in the transport workforce.

"This landmark agreement between ICAO and ITF marks a significant step forward in addressing the complex challenges facing global aviation today. By combining our expertise and resources, we are better positioned to tackle critical issues such as sustainable aviation, infrastructure development, and crisis resilience,” said Juan Carlos Salazar, ICAO Secretary General. “The enhanced data sharing and collaborative policy development outlined in this agreement will be instrumental in shaping the future of air transport. As we work towards our shared goals of a zero fatality and zero emissions aviation sector, this partnership will undoubtedly accelerate our progress and benefit the entire air transport ecosystem."

Montreal-based, ICAO is the United Nations’ specialised agency leading international co-operation towards the safe, secure, and sustainable development of air transport. The ITF is an intergovernmental organisation with 69 member countries housed by the OECD in Paris that acts as a strategic transport policy think tank across modes and organises an Annual Summit of transport ministers.
