Transport and Covid-19: responses and resources

Transport Analyst Internship - Regional Freight Connectivity for Central and Southeast Asia

About ITF

The International Transport Forum (ITF) is a global intergovernmental organisation with 66 member countries within the OECD family. The ITF works to foster a deeper understanding of the role of transport in economic growth, environmental sustainability and social inclusion and to raise the public profile of transport policy. It acts as a platform for discussion and pre-negotiation of policy issues across all transport modes. We analyse trends, share knowledge and promote exchange among transport decision-makers and civil society.

About the Internship

The ITF is looking for an intern passionate about sustainable transport development, engaging with stakeholders, and leveraging data and analytics for evidence-based policy research in the transport field. This internship aims to support the works of the ITF’s Sustainable Infrastructure Program for Asia – Transport (SIPA-T) programme, funded by the German government’s International Climate Initiative (IKI). The programme includes two studies of regional freight connectivity in Asia, one focusing on the Southeast Asia region and the other on Central Asia.

This internship will provide an excellent opportunity for the candidate to engage with international stakeholders, support the processing and analysis of socioeconomic and transport data, and contribute to developing regional freight models and pathways for a well-connected, sustainable and resilient freight sector. The intern will be part of the ITF Research Centre, reporting to the two project leads in the Data and Policy Analytics Team. The internship will be full-time and based in the OECD headquarters in Paris. This position allows for a hybrid format, with the number of on-site days subject to the agreement between the candidate and the manager and in accordance with the OECD-ITF teleworking guidance. A remote internship may be considered, subject to the agreement between the candidate and the hiring manager.

Main Responsibility

This internship will focus on supporting the two SIPA Regional Freight Connectivity projects by analysing freight infrastructure and policies in each region to identify pathways to improve connectivity, reduce CO2 emissions and create a more resilient freight transport network. Under the guidance of the project leads, the candidate will contribute to the following activities:

· Support stakeholder engagement

o Collaborate with key regional stakeholders and expert consultants to support data and information collection and scenario development.

o Assist in the organisation of stakeholder meetings and events for the dissemination of intermediate project results.

· Perform data analysis and policy/literature research

o Work with internal data analytics and modelling experts to quantify impacts of new freight infrastructure and policies.

o Assist with the validation of model outcomes and model re-calibration.

o Analyse, interpret, and visualise the results of stakeholder surveys.

o Process and visualise statistical and spatial data using Excel/R/Python and GIS tools.

o Support other data analysis efforts and policy research relevant to the project.

· Support the drafting of documents

o Provide input to policy documents, presentations and other project deliverables.

o Develop eye-catching visualisations and concise written materials to communicate analytical results to non-technical audiences.

There are likely to be opportunities to contribute to other ongoing ITF projects in a similar capacity throughout the course of the internship.
