Transport and Covid-19: responses and resources

Reducing the Impact of Covid-19 on Gender Equality in Transport (TMB/TRC meeting)

ITF Meeting ITF Meeting

Young Tae Kim, Secretary-General of the International Transport Forum, opens this event.

The impact of Covid-19 on women all around the world has been significantly disproportionate due to the fact that the majority of essential workers are women, who also face a higher burden of unpaid care and housework and gender-based violence.  In addition, women workers in the transport sector are also more at risk to the negative effects of Covid-19, given the existing gender inequality in the transport workforce that is lacking adequate measures to support women.  In transport, gender inequality is further exacerbated as a result of the decrease in public transport services during lockdowns, as women's travel behavior points to higher use of public transport.

This webinar sheds light on the following issues:

  • Why is gender equality critical to the sustainability and resiliency of the transport sector?
  • What have been the impacts of the Covid-19 crisis on gender equality in the transport sector?
  • How should Covid-19 policy responses consider gender equality in the transport workforce?

The Secretary-General of the ITF, Young Tae Kim opens the discussion. Expert keynotes are delivered by Wei-Shiuen Ng, ITF’s Advisor on Sustainable Transport and Global Outreach and Alejandra Cruz Ross, Transport Specialist, International Labour Organization (ILO).
