Safer City Streets Network: 3rd Meeting
ITF Meeting
On 11-12 April 2018, members of the Safer City Streets network gathered in Rome. International road safety initiatives were a major focal point of this meeting. The agenda also reflected the priorities of the network: pedestrian safety, cycling safety, risk indicators, mobility statistics, crash data systems, health data sources and urban road safety policies.
The ITF Safer City Streets initiative offers a platform for road safety experts working with cities to share their experience and build a global dataset for urban road safety and mobility. It was launched in October 2016 at the UN Habitat III Conference. Thanks to the support of the FIA Road Safety Grant programme, as well as the support from the International Traffic Safety Data and Analysis Group (IRTAD), it has grown rapidly to include more than 40 cities.
Rome and London were elected as co-chairs of the network. The meeting was opened by Rome’s councillor for mobility Ms Linda Meleo. Several presentations on Rome’s Sustainable Mobility Plan and Cycle Network Plan were made by the Mobility Agency (Francesco Iacorossi, Fabrizio Benvenuti and Marco Contadini).
The meeting was hosted by the Automobile Club of Italy (ACI) whose President Mr Angelo Sticchi Damiani welcomed participants and explained that ACI has been, for over 110 years, disseminating the values of responsible and sustainable mobility, encouraging exchange of information between all the forces in the field. Several presentations on pedestrian safety, physical accessibility and on the comparison of road safety statistics across Italian cities were delivered by ACI (Lucia Pennisi and Enrico Pagliari).
The meeting attracted over 55 participants. A total of 18 cities were represented: Accra, Addis Ababa, Bandung, Bangkok, Belgrade, Bogota, Budapest, Fortaleza, Gothenburg, Lisbon, London, Malta, Milan, Mumbai, Rome, São Paulo, Shanghai and Zurich. London has offered to host the next meeting in November 2018.
The FIA, main partner of the ITF on the Safer City Streets initiative, organised a Smart Cities Forum in Rome on Friday 13 April 2018. This initiative gathered mobility experts from international organisations, city authorities and industry players. Bloomberg Philanthropies organised another road safety meeting in Rome just before the Safer City Streets meeting started. It was attended by road safety experts from the 10 cities involved in their Initiative for Global Road Safety: Accra, Addis Ababa, Bandung, Bangkok, Bogota, Fortaleza, Ho Chi Minh City, Mumbai, Sao Paulo, and Shanghai. This combination of events represented a unique opportunity for participants to attend all of these consecutive meetings and get the most of their visit to Rome.
