Can Asia Lead the Way to Zero-emission Freight? Race to Zero Transport Day
The session will showcase regional best practices for optimising supply chains, increasing the systemic efficiency and moving towards more carbon-friendly modes of freight transport, through the innovative application of technology and operational optimisation. Freight transport grown exponentially since the 1950s. With international trade expected to increase over the next few decades, carbon dioxide emissions from global freight transport, especially road freight, will become progressively high. Strongest emissions increases are expected in Asian and Latin American countries to 2050 due in particular to the high growth in road tonne-kilometre (tkm) in non-OECD regions. Road freight increased by over 9% in both China and India between 2016 and 2017. Transport of good by road is currently the second largest contributor of global transport CO2 emissions after passenger road transport and has higher emission levels than aviation, rail and marine bunkers combined.
