Transport and Covid-19: responses and resources

Decarbonising Transport initiative: Policy Dialogue

The Decarbonising Transport initiative includes a global policy dialogue on transport and climate change as a core element. The outputs of the ITF transport models form the basis for an in-depth exchange on all levels with a focus on developing policy messages. The formats for these discussions range from technical workshops and policy briefings to the regular Ministers' Roundtable on Transport and Climate Change at ITF's Annual Summit and events at the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The resulting policy messages are fed into the UNFCCC process. ITF has been named a focal point for transport by the UNFCCC's Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action (MP-GCA). This gives ITF and the Decarbonising Transport initiative a central role in the exchange of information between transport stakeholders and UNFCCC.

ITF contributed to the Talanoa Dialogue, a process that collects experiences from stakeholders for a collective stocktaking of progress made towards the goals of the Paris Agreement in the run-up to COP24 in Poland in December 2018.

The ultimate goal of the policy dialogue within the ITF Decarbonising Transport initiative is to prepare the transport sector for climate change negotiations within the context of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement and to raise the climate ambitions in the sector. The ITF also works closely with the UNFCCC to lead the development of relevant Global Climate Action products, including the Marrakech Partnership Yearbook of Global Climate Action and the Climate Action Pathway for Transport.
