Algorithmic Governance in Transport workshop

Should transport authorities issue (some) regulations in machine-readable code? If so, where and how? Should governments regulate some things by algorithm? How can we better assess the impact of automated decision-making systems and ensure public welfare is maximised in the algorithm age?

ITF held ground-breaking discussions on algorithmic governance with leading experts at a Corporate Partnership Board workshop held in Paris, France, on 4-5 December 2018 (photo). The discussions explored how and where automated decision-making systems are having consequential impacts on transport activity and how to ensure policy outcomes are being delivered in a world increasingly infused with algorithmic code.

The implications of this work are broad; from enabling the right framework for Mobility as a Service (MaaS), to controlling for negative impacts from vehicles and vehicle technologies. Such technology may enable public authorities to allocate and dynamically manage public space to improve the efficiency of international logistics networks.
